5 Mobile Website Factors to Consider When Designing Your Website

It’s 2021, so you should already know how important the mobile website for your business is. Google announced a mobile-first indexing approach back in 2018, yet so many businesses neglect to take the same approach when designing their website.

More than 50% of all traffic online is from mobile devices. So similar figures are probably true for those visiting your site.

What all this means is when you’re designing your website, you need to keep mobile at the forefront of your mind. We’ve put together 5 factors you need to consider for a mobile friendly website.

1. It’s All in the CTA

Your CTA (call-to-action) needs to be front and center on your mobile site — in a very literal sense. So centralize your CTA button and don’t make users scroll for ages trying to find it.

2. Mobile Website Menus

Both your menus and your navigation should be short and sweet for a mobile optimized website. This means only keep the key information in the menus. If you have a drop-down, there shouldn’t be so many that users need to scroll to get through them.

If you have that much content on your site that you struggle to fit it all in a menu, opt for a site search function. It’s far more user-friendly for mobile provided it brings up relevant results.

3. Forms

Forms are the bane of any mobile user’s existence. Forms that don’t function are by far the worst, but forms that go on for hours or don’t fit the screen are just as frustrating.

Your forms should only be asking for the information you actually need to process whatever request a customer has. If it’s an email sign-up, their full name, birth date, mobile number, and so on aren’t relevant. So don’t ask them for it!

4. Avoid Promos and Pop-Ups

How many times have you been browsing online on your mobile when a pop-up has interrupted your experience? At best, you close it without giving it much thought or attention. At worst, it’s not obvious how to close it or isn’t responsive when you try, so you close the whole browser.

Pop-ups create an awful customer experience for those on the mobile view of websites. Even when done well, they’ll rarely reap much reward unless it’s an irresistible offer. So use them when you must, but use them wisely.

5. Make Cross-Device Browsing Easy

The way we shop online is changing. Where desktop was the preferred option, the customer journey now spans across different devices. Users may browse a site on their mobile in the research phase and make the actual transaction on a desktop device.

Making this process easy for your users is vital. You can do this by letting users email baskets to themselves, save favorite items or send themselves URL links.

You’ll notice all our tips relate to improving the user experience, as that should absolutely be the key focus of any good mobile website design.
