What Is Google Analytics and How Does It Work?

Google, the behemoth tech company worth a staggering $279.3 billion, devised an incredibly efficient analytical tool for search engine optimization and online marketing. This tool, known as Google analytics, offers crucial insight into the behavior of your website’s visitors to help businesses improve their marketing endeavors.

So, what is Google Analytics exactly, and why is it so important?

If you’re new to Google Analytics, you might find it a tad overwhelming and complex, but that’s where we come in. In today’s piece, we’ll be teaching you the basics of Google Analytics, including what it is and how it works.

What Is Google Analytics?

Put simply, Google Analytics is a web analytical and tracking tool designed by Google that shows you how visitors behave when on your website.  It’s an integral part of Google’s marketing platform and is free for anyone with an active Google account.

Google Analytics offers information about visitor behavior that may be crucial for your business’s marketing campaign. For instance, Google Analytics can help you know how many visitors visit your site, where they come from, and how long they stayed on your site.

Why Is Google Analytics Important?

Google Analytics can help propel your business to new heights, but only if you take full advantage of its features. Here are a couple of reasons why Google Analytics is so important:

  • It lets you know how well your website is performing and whether it needs improvement
  • It helps you gauge the effectiveness of your marketing strategies and initiatives
  • It shows you how and where to optimize your web pages for better conversions
  • It categorizes your web visitors into gender, age, country, and the likes, so you can implement marketing strategies that appeal to each category
  • It lets you know which kind of content or products to your web visitors so you can focus on them

How Does Google Analytics Work?

Google Analytics’ functionality is based on collecting information on your site’s visitors. Google Analytics uses JavaScript, a programming language that helps transmit information to Google’s servers. JavaScript helps make web pages more interactive by converting read-only HTML into a format we can all understand (text, images, videos, colors).

Google Analytics inserts a JavaScript page tag in each page’s code. The tag that runs in each user’s web browser collects information and sends it to Google’s servers. Google Analytics then creates reports based on the information it receives.

These reports are customizable, depending on what data you need. You, therefore, need to lock down the metrics and data you need on your report. Web users can decide what data they want the tags to send to the servers by allowing or denying cookies.

The entire thing seems complicated, but understanding Google Analytics for beginners takes time; however, you’ll soon get the hang of it. Fortunately, Google has created a platform known as Google Analytics Academy to help interested parties learn everything they need to know about Google Analytics.
